Tibor Honty: Wanderings and Wanderers

A photographic exhibition open from 26 June until 31 August 2009. Tibor Honty (9 May 1907, Krompachy na Slovensku – 1 December 1968, Prague), initially a sculptor, ceramist and photographer-autodidact who had a modest technique without pretentious effects. In his work movement and tranquility, fine poetic play and rigidly accurate observations of the world are intertwined. And his work opens photography, both on the level of content and on the level of style, to other genres – fine arts, music, and literature. Just for a moment go more than a hundred years back and taste the magic of gone life of old Prague when laundry was washed on the banks of Vltava and dogs bathed in the river, to take a closer look at worldly wanderers from caravans ready to offer the prophecy of a beautiful gypsy for a penny, or just to delight in the picture outlined by the artist’s objective, if you like. All of this can be found in the exhibition of Tibor Honty’s photographs “Wanderings and Wanderers”.

The unique cycle People from the caravans is represented by more than sixty photographs, illustrating through the author’s typical poetic perspective the world or “half-world” of people from merry-go-rounds and circuses, as well as that of wandering performers. Further, the exhibition features individual examples of his freestyle work, which may surprise by looking for original relations and connections between ordinary objects or situations, sometimes with a surreal outcome.

The author does, both on the level of content and style, open photography to other genres – fine arts, music, and literature. In spite of the period critique, he refused to keep individual branches of art in timorous pigeonholes. He understood well that it is exactly the courage to confront photography with other artistic disciplines that opens the possibility of their mutual enrichment.
